Cougars came into this first game of a two game weekend with virtually a full-strength squad only missing Abu-Ebid unavailable so the team lined up with Pullen & Bonello (NMs); P Young, R Young, Kielczewski, Pettitt, Thrower and McGiffin (D) and Thompson, Clinton, Dolphin, Ford, Taylor, Nell, Redmond, Bancroft, Smith and Da Cova (F). Opponents Jets had a bench strength of just 13 for this match. Match officials I. Hayden, C. Davies and Z. Dolphin.

Shots on Goal
Cougars > 20 on Porter
Jets > 7 on Bonello
Bonello started this game in net for Cougars, but must have quickly wished he hadn’t as Jets seemingly broke forward and scored at will opening up a 3 – 0 lead (from 5 shots) by 5:05 at which time Cougars called a time-out to try to calm their frazzled and disordered performance to date. It seemed to work as Cougars began to string a few passes together but it still looked as though they needed to score the next goal to have any chance of mounting a recovery; and they duly did with McGiffin rounding off a quick breakout from defence with a fine finish. Three penalties to each team in the period, more or less what you would expect from a game between these two teams.
Shots on Goal
Cougars > 13 on Porter (personal total 33)
Jets > 5 on Bonello
In the second period and the big checks began to be made, but the first flashpoint came following a simple holding call on Dolphin when Jets’ Samuel for some reason launched an unprovoked attack on a different Cougars player down by the goal line and suddenly Dolphin seemed to be involved in the fracas, but the resulting not going straight to the penalty box call was assessed against the bench rather than the player. As things began to settle down some, Cougars got another goal back, and you could visibly see the effect it had on both teams, and then with the scores being levelled soon after, Cougars began to believe that they could after all extend their winning run. The period ended with more Cougar’s pressure and it has to be said that the go-ahead goal was nothing more than they deserved from such an awful start.

Cougars > 17 on Croyle (personal total 17 and team total 50)
Jets > 7 on Bonello (personal and team total 19)
Into the third and Jets replaced starting netminder Porter with back-up Croyle, and his start looked like it might match Bonello’s from earlier as Cougars quickly extended their lead. There was also an early penalty against Jets as they started to get more physical and frustrated as the game drifted away from them. Then at 48 mins came the major flashpoint, as following the adjudgement of a cross-checking call against Smith (correctly), but with no corresponding Jets penalty in the incident (which there should have been); Jets Noonan took some sort of revenge as he kicked out at Smith resulting in Pettitt steaming across the ice to exact retribution, whilst this scuffle continued two others broke out amongst the players on the ice with one Jets player leaving the bench to get involved (Cougars bench discipline meanwhile was good to see). At the end of this three players from each side all got 2+2+10 Roughing penalties while Noonan escaped with a 5+Game Tripping call instead of the Match penalty for Kicking that he should have received. These penalties put the six players out of the game which was played out with little further incident; Jets clawed one back on a delayed penalty call against Thrower while Cougars got the winning margin back to three with the final goal of the game just over four mins from the end, although they also had two further goals disallowed both for there being adjudged to be a player in the crease. After the poor start Cougars thoroughly deserved their victory and the Shots on Goal totals were reflective of the play. Player of the match awards were given to Jets’ Lock and Cougars’ Redmond (who it should be noted scored a straight hat-trick, completed just before the “fun” started).
